Australian Capital Territory
A small landlocked federal territory carved from New South Wales, created in 1911 to host Canberra, Australia's purpose-built capital city and seat of national government.
New South Wales
Australia's oldest and most populous state, founded as a British colony in 1788. Home to Sydney, the largest city, and the Blue Mountains. Located on the southeastern coast.
Northern Territory
A vast, sparsely populated federal territory in Australia's north-central interior. Known for Uluru (Ayers Rock), the Top End tropical region, Darwin as its capital, and large Indigenous communities.
Queensland
Australia's second-largest state, occupying the northeastern corner. Known for the Great Barrier Reef, tropical rainforests, and its capital Brisbane, host of the 2032 Summer Olympics.
South Australia
A southern state known for the Outback, the Flinders Ranges, and the city of Adelaide. A major wine-producing region, home to the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale.
Tasmania
An island state separated from mainland Australia by the Bass Strait. Known for rugged wilderness, the Tasmanian devil, cool-climate food and wine, and its capital Hobart.
Victoria
Australia's smallest mainland state and second most populous. Home to Melbourne, the cultural and financial hub, the Great Ocean Road, and the Grampians mountain range.
Western Australia
Australia's largest state by area, covering the entire western third of the continent. Rich in mineral resources; Perth is the capital, and the region includes the Kimberley and Pilbara.
