AP U.S. History: What to Expect and How to Study

AP U.S. History (APUSH) is a college-level course taken by high school students who want to earn college credit or demonstrate advanced academic readiness. The course is administered by the College Board, which publishes the official course and exam description — check the College Board website for current exam details, scoring information, and any updates to the curriculum.

What the Course Covers

The content is organized into nine chronological periods, each with its own themes and key developments:

  1. Period 1: 1491–1607 — Pre-Columbian societies, European exploration, and early contact among Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans. Start with the U1 1491–1607 flashcard deck or the Unit 1 Study Guide.
  2. Period 2: 1607–1754 — European colonization, colonial societies, transatlantic trade, and conflicts with Native peoples. See the U2 1607–1754 flashcard deck and the Unit 2 Study Guide.
  9. Period 9: 1980–Present — The Reagan Revolution, end of the Cold War, globalization, and culture wars. Use the Contemporary America deck and the 1980–Present quiz.

Beyond content knowledge, the exam tests specific skills: constructing a Document-Based Question (DBQ) essay using primary sources, writing a Long Essay, and answering Short-Answer Questions that require concise analytical thinking about causation, continuity, and change.

How to Study Effectively

APUSH rewards students who review consistently rather than cramming. A few habits make a real difference:

  • Work period by period. Each period builds on the last. Solid understanding of colonial tensions makes the Revolution easier to grasp, and so on.
  • Use flashcards for key terms, figures, and events. Active recall — testing yourself rather than re-reading — is one of the most reliable study techniques. Knovli's flashcard system is built around this approach.
  • Practice daily in short sessions. Even ten to fifteen minutes a day adds up quickly. Knovli's study modes and mastery plan help you track what you know and focus on what you don't.
  • Self-test with quizzes. Multiple-choice practice sharpens the kind of analytical thinking APUSH requires. Knovli's quiz games make this less tedious.
  • Practice writing. The DBQ and long essay are worth a significant portion of the exam. Read primary sources carefully, identify the argument they support, and practice outlining responses before you write them out in full.
