How Knovli treats student data
This page describes, in plain language, what Knovli does to protect students. The Privacy Policy and Terms are the formal documents; where this page and the policy differ, the policy governs.

Who Knovli is for
Knovli is made for schools and for general learners, from middle school up. Anyone aged 13 or over can create their own account.
It is not aimed primarily at young children, but some children under 13 do use it. They can only do so in one of two ways: through their school, joining a teacher’s class with a class code, or when a parent or guardian registers them and gives verified consent. A child under 13 cannot sign up on their own.
Who counts as a student
An account is treated as a student account when it joined with a class code, is enrolled in a class, signs in through a school, or is marked as belonging to a child. Everything below applies to those accounts automatically — a student does not have to switch anything on.
What other people can see
- A player name, not a real name
- On public leaderboards and in games with people outside their class, a student appears under a generated player name with no photo.
- No public profile
- A student’s profile cannot be set to public. It can be visible to their own class or to nobody.
- No email addresses
- Email addresses are never shown to other users.
- No precise location
- Nothing more precise than a country is ever shown for a student.
Advertising and tracking
Student accounts are not shown advertising.
Knovli records which page a new visitor arrived from so that we can tell which of our own pages are useful. That measurement honours the Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track browser signals, and it is skipped for student accounts.
What gets published, and how it is checked
Anything on Knovli can stay private. Before a deck can be made public and appear in Explore, its text is screened automatically, and if the check cannot be completed the deck is not published. Images are checked before they are shown to other people.
Every public deck has a report button. Reports go to a person, and content that breaks the rules is removed. Current-events questions in the Daily Quiz are screened for a school audience before they are published.
Play between students
There is no open chat or direct messaging between players. A teacher or district can stop their students hosting Group Play games while still letting them join the games the teacher hosts.
Schools, parents and the law
When a school uses Knovli with its students, the school decides what is assigned and remains in charge of its students’ education records. Knovli uses student information to provide the service to that school and its students, not to advertise to them.
A parent or guardian can ask to review, correct or delete their child’s information, or withdraw consent. Requests go to support@harborframelabs.com and are answered within 30 days. The Privacy Policy sets out how Knovli approaches the laws that protect children’s and students’ data, including COPPA and FERPA in the United States.
Deleting data
An account holder can delete their account from their profile settings. A school or a parent can ask us to delete a student’s account at support@harborframelabs.com.
